How to Choose a Gaming PC (Even If You Don't Speak Spec)

If you're buying a gaming PC, for yourself or as a present, and terms like GPU mean nothing to you, this one's for you. You only need answers to four questions, and none of them are technical.

1. What games, or what player?

The games decide the hardware. Fortnite, Minecraft and Roblox run beautifully on our entry builds. Call of Duty, Elden Ring or Cyberpunk want a mid-range machine. Flight sims, 4K or “everything maxed” means high-end. Buying for a teenager and don't know what they play? Ask them their three most-played games. That one text saves you hours of research.

2. What's the budget, honestly?

Don't bother memorising spec sheets. Think in tiers instead: an entry build for smooth everyday gaming, mid-range for high frame rates in demanding games, high-end for 4K and streaming. 3. What's included, and what isn't?

A “gaming PC” listing is usually just the tower. You might also need a monitor, keyboard, mouse and headset. If they already game on a console or laptop they've probably got some of it. Check before you buy, or ask us and we'll sort a sensible bundle.

4. Who fixes it when something goes wrong?

This is the question gift-buyers skip and then regret. A PC from a random marketplace seller means warranty roulette.
