Is It Cheaper to Build Your Own PC in Australia?

Short answer: sometimes, but by less than you'd think. And the real costs of doing it yourself don't show up on any invoice. Here's the honest maths from a shop that sells parts to DIY builders and builds complete PCs, every day.

Where DIY saves money

Building it yourself means no assembly labour, and if you're patient you can shop each part around and wait for sales. If you've already got bits you can reuse, like a case, storage or a decent power supply, the savings get real. And if you enjoy the process, that counts for something too.

Where the savings disappear

First, parts pricing is tighter than it used to be. We price-match PC parts, and volume builders get component pricing individuals don't, so the gap on identical parts is often small.

Second, mistakes cost money. A badly seated cooler, a power supply that can't handle GPU spikes, RAM that won't run at rated speed on your board. Any of those costs you money or performance, and a build that won't turn on can eat a whole weekend.

Third, and this is the big one: warranty. Build it yourself and every part has its own manufacturer warranty. When something fails you have to work out which part it is (hard without spares to swap in), then send it off on its own, which can take weeks. A machine built by us has one 3-year return-to-base warranty on the lot, and if we've got the part in stock we swap it on the spot.

The Australian bit

American price comparisons don't really translate here. Import pricing, GST and shipping mean Australian part prices sit pretty close together across retailers, so the DIY margin here is thinner than the YouTube videos suggest.

Verdict

Build it yourself because you enjoy it and want the control, not mainly to save money.
